Oulu Toripolliisi statue
Over the years, the Market Square has provided visitors with a year-round meeting and trading place, which is why the busy place also required security. A special feature of Oulu's police history were the market policemen, whose task it was to keep the square in order. It was through them that a large part of the city and the population of the province became acquainted with the police and the police.
The time of the Toripolizei lasted in Oulu from 1906 to 1979. From these times, the sayings 'Are they from Oulu, are they afraid of the Poles' and 'Gentlemen are good and disperse' have remained in Oulu. After the end of the Tor patrol, a bronze statue, Toripolliisi, designed by Kaarlo Mikkonen, was erected in front of the Kauppahalli in 1987 as a tribute to these policemen.
This 220 centimetre tall Oulu policeman, standing with his rattling fins and standing in his bucket hat, has over time become one of the most representative sights of Oulu and a subject of photography, who is also actively involved in the lives of Oulu residents during various celebrations and events. You too can go for a friendly photo with lepposan Toripolliis and prove that you were in Oulu!
